The men who keep Hamburg clean are a special breed. They know every backyard but are seldom noticed by the ones they clean up after.
Our Task: Give the Binmen a way of expressing their love for their city. Show the people of Hamburg how much the Guys in Orange care.
The Solution: Binmen became artists. We asked them to photograph their favourite places with their trash containers. The trashcan is a standard 1.100 litre trash container with a hole in the front and a giant piece of photographic paper in the back – an oversized pinhole camera. The pictures were exhibited at Bucerius Art Forum, one of the most important museums for contemporary art in Germany. They ran in virtually every magazine and newspaper in the whole country. Not to mention more than 20 television and radio broadcasts celebrating the binmen artists of the Hamburg waste collection service.
Target Audience: Political decision makers, clients and future clients of the Stadtreinigung Hamburg, the people of Hamburg.
